Dental implants are an effective tooth replacement option that can offer you back the full look and function of your smile. But, if you’ve been looking into the procedure, you may not be that excited about its long recovery periods.

The healing period for a dental implant surgery can range from 4 to 6 months, maybe even more, depending on your specific case. But is this timeline true?

Well, the short answer is yes, it takes a few months before you can fully recover from implant surgery. To understand why; check out this short implant healing timeline.

First, How Do Implants Work?

Dental implants are made from 3 elements:

  • Metal post
  • Abutment
  • Dental crown

Implant surgery involves making an incision into the gum line and inserting the metal post (implant root) into the jaw bone. When talking about implant recovery, this is the part that most people discuss.

After getting the metal post inserted, the body begins a process called osseointegration, which essentially means that bone and soft tissues begin to heal around the metal post. You cannot get your abutment and dental crown before this healing process is complete.

Implant Healing Timeline

Immediately After Your Surgery

You’ll be given a local anesthetic or even be sedated for the procedure to ensure you do not feel any pain during it. The effects can last for a few hours after it, so it’s common to feel perfectly fine when you leave the dentist’s office.

As the anesthetic wears off, you can feel a bit of pain, soreness, and swelling, especially in the first 24 hours. This is perfectly normal and a sign your body is trying to heal around the implant.

First Week

Your symptoms should not be as pronounced 1 week after your surgery. By this point, the incision itself should be closed, so you will not experience any more bleeding. However, underneath the surface, the body is still hard at work healing your implant.

For a few weeks after surgery, you will need to make some slight lifestyle changes:

  • Eat softer foods that don’t require lots of chewing
  • Eat on the other side of the mouth
  • Maintain good oral hygiene
  • Don’t brush directly over the implant site
  • Stop smoking

The Next Few Months

After a few weeks, you should not be bothered with unwanted symptoms anymore. The surgery site should feel completely normal, and you can resume eating normally.

Osseointegration is a slow process, so you are looking for a rather lengthy wait period. Usually, patients need about six months total before they complete their implant procedure.
