What Are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns are protective caps that cover the entire visible surface of a tooth. At A Street Dental in Grants Pass, we use crowns for a range of purposes: protecting a weak tooth, holding a cracked tooth together, anchoring a dental bridge, completing a dental implant restoration, or covering up cosmetic imperfections like discoloration. Crowns are also routinely needed after root canal treatment, particularly on the molars, since those teeth take on the most force from daily chewing.
Made from a variety of durable materials, a well-fitted crown is built to hold up under everyday use while blending in naturally with the rest of your smile.

When You Might Need a Dental Crown
- A Cracked or Fractured Tooth: A crown holds the tooth together and protects it from further damage.
- A Weakened Tooth: Whether from decay or a large filling, a crown reinforces a tooth that's at risk of breaking.
- After a Root Canal: Crowns are commonly placed after root canal therapy to protect the treated tooth, especially on back teeth.
- Supporting a Bridge: Crowns on the teeth surrounding a gap anchor a dental bridge in place.
- Completing a Dental Implant: A crown is the final piece attached to an implant, restoring its shape and function.
- Cosmetic Correction: A crown can also cover a discolored or misshapen tooth for a more even smile.
Same-Day Crowns in Just One Visit
Not every crown requires multiple visits. Using our in-house lab, we can design, craft, and place a custom, high-quality crown in a single appointment, with no temporary crown or follow-up visit needed. Instead of sending impressions out and waiting weeks for a lab to fabricate your restoration, our team designs and mills the crown right here in the office while you wait, then checks the fit, shade, and bite before permanently bonding it in place.
This approach works well for many common situations, including a cracked tooth, a large cavity, or a tooth that needs protection after a root canal. Not every case is a fit for a same-day crown. If your tooth needs more extensive preparation or if a lab-fabricated crown is a better match for your bite and material preferences, we'll walk you through that during your visit.

What to Expect After Getting Your Crown
- Mild sensitivity to hot or cold around the crowned tooth for a few days is common and typically fades on its own.
- Your bite may feel slightly different at first as you get used to the new crown, and it should settle in within a short time.
- If you had a temporary crown while waiting for your permanent one, avoid sticky or hard foods on that tooth to keep it from coming loose.
- Contact us if your bite feels off after the permanent crown is placed, or if you notice ongoing pain, since a quick adjustment can usually resolve either issue.
