Want to improve how your smile looks? Then you’re in luck because modern dentistry has many options for you!

However, some of these procedures can get a bit confusing, especially if you don’t really know what you specifically need in order to enhance your look.

For instance, two popular ways to improve how your teeth look are veneers and dental crowns. However, they are often used to address completely different concerns.

Here are the major differences between the two:

1. The Procedure Itself

Veneers are a thin layer of porcelain or composite that is bonded to the front surface of your natural teeth. In order to get veneers, the dentist needs to shave a bit of the tooth enamel to create a rough texture. Your natural teeth are not completely covered by veneers.

Dental crowns, on the other hand, go on top of your tooth. To get a crown, the dentist needs to greatly reduce the size of the tooth and reshape it, after which the dental crown is cemented on top.

2. The Issues They Address

Veneers are commonly used for various mild cosmetic issues such as:

  • Tooth discoloration
  • Severe staining
  • Gaps between the teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Irregularly sized teeth
  • Small chips or cracks

But dental crowns are an integral part of dental restoration and are commonly recommended when a tooth has suffered some sort of damage, such as because of a large cavity or after a root canal.

As a result, dental crowns are not a top choice when a patient only wants to improve the look of their teeth, but they are in generally good oral health.

3. Protection

Dental crowns offer full protection of the natural tooth. It’s used to help restore a tooth to its full function and look after certain types of damage, such as severe cracks or large fillings.

Veneers only cover the front part of your natural teeth, which means they are still exposed and can even be visible when you laugh or smile.

4. Replacement

Veneers can generally not be fixed, so if they suffer any damage, you will need to change your veneers.

With dental crowns, it may be possible to repair them without having to get a new one. For instance, if the crown is slightly chipped, the dentist may fix the issue by applying a bit of resin.
